A whale disappears beneath the surfaceHometown: Enfield, New Hampshire

Major: Environmental Studies and Animal Biology

Eco League School I Attend: Prescott College

Most Dramatic Difference Between the Two Environments: The habitat, the weather, and the vegetation were very different. The water everywhere off Maine’s coast was refreshing.

Fun Things to Do in the Area: Apple picking in the fall. A short drive to the mainland there is a wonderful orchard.

My Best Excursion/Adventure There: Spending the first two weeks on “the rock,” a half-acre rock with a boathouse, lighthouse and a lighthouse keeper’s home converted to bunks. When we weren’t watching whales and seals, we were in the loft learning about them!

Best Time to Go: I would recommend going in the fall. If you are from back East it will be like going home, and if you’ve never seen the leaves change it is a beautiful place to experience the seasons.

Studying in the greenhouseWhat to Read Up on Before You Go: I picked up a general guide to North Atlantic sea life before I went. It turned out useful, especially the visuals, and was a fun read.

What is Unique About the People There: The town itself is full of tourists from all over the country and the world.

Faculty Member I Most Enjoyed Working With: Marine Mammalology professor Sean Todd taught with a huge amount of enthusiasm. He also had a great sense of humor and was very approachable.

Reasons to Participate in an Eco League Experience: The Eco League allowed me to explore another style of learning, while still attending a college with a similar philosophy of balancing human and environmental needs.
