Major: Environmental Studies, Writing & Literature
Eco League School I Attend: Prescott College
Eco League School I visited: Green Mountain College
Most dramatic difference between the two environments: Living on campus at Green Mountain was so different from renting in Prescott. When you live, work, study, and go to class all in the same place, you have a lot more time.  When there were college-hosted events, I was able to attend a lot more, and spontaneously. There was also a gym, a swimming pool, and a health center all within 2 minutes walk from my room.  I also had an excellent roommate. And it was great to have so much water all around.
Courses I took: Geology, Calculus, Environmental Writing, Creative Writing, Teacher as Decision-Maker
Fun things to do in the area: There is a Poultney slate museum (quaint and super super cool). There are little lakes to float on – the school will rent you kayaks, canoes and other equipment you need. There’s a farm right on campus so there are always animals nearby to visit with - chickens, oxen, and sheep.  There’s a stream with a rope swing and also a beautiful forest at the edge of campus to wander through.
Best excursion/adventure there: Lazy canoeing on the lake nearby.
Best Time to Go: FALL.
What to read up on before you go: Natural history and geology of the area
What is unique about the people there: Vermonters have an especially intense sense of place and are rightly proud of the food they produce. They also like cold weather. It was an unusually warm sunny fall when I was there but people were eager to start ice-fishing.
students in canoe on lakeReasons to participate in an Eco League experience: Why not? It is an opportunity to see a new place, challenge yourself in a new situation, and get to know other people who have similar core interests to the people at your school but from the perspective of a different landscape. You also get to return to your home school with new ideas of how things could work and also a deeper appreciation for the uniqueness of your own community. Taking the writing courses let me see how I could bring writing into my program when I got back to Prescott College.
