APU is a coeducational, private liberal arts university devoted to “Active Learning” and student responsibility-in the classroom, in creating a sustainable society, and in Alaska’s extraordinary wilderness.

Majors/Areas of Study

Education (K-8), environmental science, liberal studies, outdoor studies, counseling psychology, business administration, and combinations of the above. APU offers seven master’s degrees in these areas of study.

Academic Calendar

Block and Session semesters. A four-week Block for travel courses and on-campus intensives starts each semester-in September, January, and May. In the ensuing 11-week Session on campus, students take 3-4 courses simultaneously.

Special Programs

The Outdoor Program offers students in all majors camping, hiking, mountaineering, canoeing, river rafting, sea kayaking, skiing, ice climbing, and biking trips. The APU Nordic Ski Center provides students advanced ski coaching and competition on the national and international level.

Notable Eco Activities

Student eco-projects are carried out at The Kellogg Farm (our environmental education center), throughout Alaska, and elsewhere in the world. The Senior Project is a 12-credit student-designed project that caps the undergraduate experience.

Scholarship/Financial Assistance

In a typical year, over 90 percent of students receive financial assistance. All students who apply for admission receive individualized financial counseling
